Why AussieDeutsch Exists
Learning German in Australia is harder than it should be. There are almost no German bookshops. The Goethe-Institut only has campuses in Sydney and Melbourne. Most German learning websites are built for Americans or British learners and do not address the specific questions Australians actually have — which exams do you need for an Australian partner visa to Germany? Where can you sit the Goethe B1 if you live in Brisbane? What is the working holiday visa age limit for Australians specifically?
AussieDeutsch was built to answer those questions. It is a practical, honest resource for Australians learning German — whether you are starting from scratch, preparing for a Goethe exam, planning to move to Germany, or reconnecting with German heritage your family lost generations ago.
The Person Behind the Site
I am an Australian who learned German to B1 level without ever living in Germany — mostly through books I had to order off Amazon because nothing was available locally, apps, and a lot of trial and error figuring out which resources actually worked.
I know travel websites inside out — I run several — but German learning was new territory. What struck me was how scattered and un-Australian most of the information was. So I built the resource I wished had existed when I started.
I am currently learning Swiss German (*Schweizerdeutsch*), which is even harder to find resources for than standard German. That content is coming to this site eventually — once the German foundation is solid.
Current level: B1 German (working toward B2). Beginner Swiss German. Based in Australia.
